THE "ART OF APARTMENTS"

Airdate: Sunday, February 4, 2024, 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. EST

Toronto heritage advocate, Adam Wynne, and heritage architect, Eric Charron, in conversation with CSDA/CCAD Board member, Charlotte Mickie, reveal the rich decorative details hidden behind the doors of Toronto’s most venerable apartment buildings. Often through the grace of benign neglect, these structures may now hold the last best evidence of the City’s Edwardian past, providing intimate glimpses of life at the turn of the last century. As the City densifies and develops, that record is increasingly threatened.

BIOGRAPHIES

Charlotte Mickie is active on the boards of the CSDA/CCAD and the Annex Residents Association.  An avid advocate for tenants' rights and a heritage enthusiast, Charlotte participates in the No Demovictions collective. The Designation of her Edwardian apartment building, Spadina Gardens, was recently featured in the TVO documentary, Charlotte's Castle.

Eric Charron is staff architect at Diamond Schmitt, with expertise in historic buildings.

Adam Wynne is a Toronto heritage advocate and a 2023 nominee for the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario's Stephen A. Otto Award in Research and Documentation.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Spadina Gardens, one of the buildings referenced in the "Art of Apartments" presentation, along with CSDA Board member and volunteer extraordinaire, Charlotte Mickie, were featured in a recent TVO documentary called Charlotte's Castle. It follows a cast of unlikely activists as they band together to hang on to their homes in this historic Toronto building, a remarkable upscale rental apartment that's been purchased by Dutch developers.
