Printed Textiles from Kinngait Studios: Curator’s Talk with Roxane Shaughnessy

  • 27 Mar 2021
  • 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
  • Zoom Presentation

Join us on March 27 at 3 PM for a talk on the exhibition Printed Textiles from Kinngait Studios mounted by the Textile Museum of Canada.

The exhibition presents the little-known story of a group of Inuit artists and printmakers who produced a collection of graphic textiles in Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut in the 1950s and '60s–a period of social change that disrupted traditional language and relationships to the land.

The cotton and linen fabrics with bold designs are a physical record of a relatively short-lived experimental initiative undertaken during the early days of the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative when Kinngait’s famous print program was just beginning

Lead Curator Roxane Shaughnessy will speak about the history and impact of the fabric printing initiative and its continued relevance today.
